How to Build a Shower Pan Out of Durock

Installing a shower pan in your home requires some skill in order to level the pan correctly. One way to ensure that the shower pan is perfectly level and supported properly is to install the pan using Durock cement board. This installation increases the stability of the shower pan by giving it a solid base to sit on. The cement board is also water resistant, so it will prevent rot and mold growth if the shower pan cracks or leaks.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the shower pan base into the shower alcove so the edges meet the wall framing on each side. Trace around the edge of the pan with a pencil to indicate its position on the floor. Remove the pan.

    • 2

Cut a sheet of Durock with a reciprocal saw to match the outline on the floor, and set it in place on the floor. Mark and cut out the drain hole in the Durock and the floor with a hole saw. Mount the Durock to the floor with masonry screws and a screwdriver.

    • 3

Install the shower drain in the shower pan by setting it into the shower pan and screwing the bottom portion of the drain to the top portion with a pair of large pliers.

    • 4

Spread a thin layer (about an inch deep) of sand mix, which is cement and sand, over the sheet of Durock with a trowel. Set the shower pan pack in the alcove on the sand mix. Level the pan using a carpenter's level. Mount the pan to the wall framing with screws and a screwdriver.
