How to Cut Torch Tank Sizes

Torch tanks contain oxygen and acetylene, and are regulated by how much cubic feet of both substances they hold. Sizes range from large tanks that need to be wheeled around on a cart, to small sizes that you can pick up. You can easily cut down sizes of torch tank rigs by exchanging tank sizes. It's as simple as removing the torch and hoses, and replacing the tanks with smaller ones. It doesn't cut down on efficiency. It just makes it easier to handle the cutting rig, making it more portable and cheaper to maintain. The procedure to cut down tank sizes works on all types of tanks.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the shutoff valve on the top of the tank. There is a single large knob at the top of the tank. It looks exactly like a water faucet shutoff valve. Turn it counterclockwise until it's tight.

    • 2

Unscrew the regulator from the shutoff valve. The regulator has two pressure dials on it. They protrude out horizontally from the shutoff valve. Use a 1/2-inch open-end wrench on the brass fitting at the base of the regulator, just where it emerges from the shutoff valve. Turn it counterclockwise until the regulator dials become loose, and then remove them.

Insert the end of the regulator into the shutoff valve on a smaller tank. Tighten the 1/2-inch brass fitting with the wrench until the regulator is tight and secure on the tank. Turn the large water faucet valve on the tank clockwise to pressurize the regulator.
