How to Detect Radiation in Concrete Aggregate

The American Nuclear Society says exposure to any radiation, no matter how small the amount, could be detrimental to human health, and cause cancer and hereditary genetic damage. If you have any reason to believe that any concrete aggregate you're exposed to regularly could have been contaminated by radiation, you should obtain a radiation detector and check it immediately.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a good-quality radiation detector from an expert retailer. The small radiation detectors available from local hardware stores may not be sensitive enough to pick up low levels of radiation in your concrete aggregate. Confirm with your chosen retailer that the detector you purchase is capable of picking up a reading in your aggregate.

    • 2

Read through the instructions that come with your detector and set it up as per the manufacturer's specifications. Radiation detectors come in a range of different forms, so the method for operating yours will depend on the make and model you purchase. Some detectors are handheld, while others come in the form of a small box with a sensor attached to it. If your detector has a USB connector, you'll be able to hook it up to your computer to analyze your readings.

    • 3

Ensure your detector is charged fully if it runs off a battery. If not, plug it into a power source.

    • 4

Run your detector's sensor over your concrete aggregate as per the manufacturer's instructions and wait for a reading.

Contact the Environmental Protection Agency for advice on how to dispose of your concrete aggregate if you find radiation is present.
