How to Monitor Refrigerant

Refrigerant is hazardous when it leaks. It should cycle through the cooling system over and over again since it is contained in a closed system. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the system and then removes it through a series of coils and hoses. Monitoring your refrigerant helps ensure that the cooling system works properly and doesn't require maintenance.

Inspect your refrigeration unit and its hoses regularly to look for signs of leaking. If a hose is cracked or worn, it is in danger of releasing refrigerant. Likewise, a loose connector may not be properly sealed, and gas can escape. If you see excessive moisture on the hoses or witness escaping gas, the system needs repair.

Listen for the sound of escaping gas. Leaks are often accompanied by a low hissing sound.

Install a refrigerant monitor. Follow the instructions for your specific monitor because it varies depending on which type you use. Most models include a pump and a sensor that detect multiple refrigerant types. They trigger an alarm when refrigerant or carbon monoxide is detected in the air. For best results, position the monitor close to hoses and connections where leaks are more likely, but also choose a location where the display is easily seen. If the monitor comes with a separate display, place the display just outside of the room where the refrigerant is located. Check for potential leaks before entering the room.
