How to Plumb a Toilet Below Concrete

If you need to plumb a toilet beneath concrete, you have a big job. However, the most challenging part is breaking through the concrete, since you need to install the plumbing lines under the slab. This sounds like a big job, and it is, but the project is much easier with a jackhammer. If you have never used one before, you might want to leave this job to a contractor. If you have used a jackhammer previously, this project is within your grasp.

Things You'll Need

  • Chalk
  • Jackhammer
  • Shovel
  • PVC drain pipe, 3-inch
  • PVC couplings and fittings, 3-inch (as necessary)
  • PVC adhesive
  • T-fitting

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the location of the toilet on the concrete slab and then trace the route of the plumbing to the main drain line in the basement with chalk.

    • 2

Cut into the slab with the jackhammer following your mark, and dig out a 4-inch hole for the flange, along with a 4- to 5-inch-wide channel to lay in the toilet plumbing. Always wear protective goggles whei using the jackhammer.

    • 3

Dig a shallow trench in the dirt in your channel with a shovel. Route 3-inch PVC drain pipe along the trench, fastening the pipe with couplings or fittings and PVC adhesive as needed for your particular plumbing layout.

    • 4

Attach the drain line to the main drain line by cutting into the drain line and inserting a T-fitting. Connect the toilet drain line to the T-fitting with PVC adhesive.

    • 5

Connect the toilet flange to the other end of the drain line, the point where the toilet will be. Pour pea gravel over the piping and under the flange. Mix concrete and spread it around the underside of the flange and over the piping. Give the concrete 24 hours to dry before walking on it.
