How to Make Twisted Graphite Packing

Sometimes home repair takes a little thought and ingenuity. If you're looking to create seals for many different things around your house, or many houses you happen to be working on, consider buying graphite yarn in bulk and creating your own twisted, also known as braided, graphite packing. Homemade packing also allows you to use as much or as little as you need, as you can measure on the spot. So gather up your graphite yarn and get to braiding.

Things You'll Need

  • Three strands of graphite yarn
  • Tape measure
  • Metal-cutting shears

Instructions

    • 1

Gather together two three strands of graphite yarn. If you merely want to twist the strands together, you will only need two; if you intend to braid the strands because you have more area to account for seal-wise, you will need three.

    • 2

Measure the area you need to seal and then measure your graphite yarn. Cut the yarn down to size, if you need to, but leave a few inches to account for the twisting and in case you make any mistakes.

    • 3

Twist your graphite yarn together by holding tight at the top and crossing the strands of yarn on top of each other, back and forth, until you reach the end. If you're braiding the graphite yarn, place a weight at the top of the strands on a flat surface, and cross the right strand across the center, then the left strand across the center and repeat until you've finished braiding.
