How to Move a Shower Drain in the Basement

To move a shower drain in your basement, you have to break into the concrete floor. This requires a heavy-duty power tool called a jackhammer, which is available for rent at tool rental stores. Cutting through a concrete floor is hard work, so expect to spend at least a day performing this task. After installing the drain, you must patch the concrete, so allow another full day of drying time in addition to your work time.

  • Concrete chisel
  • Hammer
  • Hacksaw
  • Jackhammer
  • PVC drain pipe
  • Couplings and fittings (as necessary)

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the shower drain grate and unscrew the drain cover from the drain base with a drain wrench. Remove the top of the drain.

    • 2

Chisel away the concrete around the base of the shower drain with a concrete chisel and hammer until you expose the base of the drain. Remove the rest of the concrete around the drain and over the drain line that runs to the drain, using a jackhammer. Lift out the drain and cut it from the main drain line with a hacksaw.

    • 3

Route the path to the new location for the shower drain with chalk on the floor. Remove the concrete in the path to build a channel for the new drain line with the jackhammer.

    • 4

Dig out the soil in your new drain channel and lay in your new drainpipe. Connect all pipe joints with the proper couplings and fittings using PVC cement as necessary for your installation. Install the new shower drain on the end of the pipe at the proper location in your floor using a compression washer.

Cover the drain line and the area around the shower drain with pea gravel and trowel cement on top. Let the cement dry for 24 hours.
