How to Refinish Metal Showers

Metal showers are not easily refinished because they do not hold paint well. After several uses, the paint starts to wear and peel off. This can be prevented by preparing the shower surface and using the right products. Under ideal circumstances, a painted shower can last for years. Use durable epoxy paint for the best results.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the metal drains by popping them out of the drain hole with a screwdriver. Cover any areas you don't want to paint using painter's tape and plastic.

    • 2

Scrape off any caulking, soap residue and sealant using a putty knife or razor blade. Avoid scratching the metal surface.

    • 3

Wash the surface using a mixture of equal parts bleach and water to kill any mold spores. Rinse with plain water.

    • 4

Scrub the shower's surfaces with steel wool and an abrasive powder cleanser to remove any remaining residue and roughen the surface. Rinse thoroughly and dry the surface. Alternatively, use a scale remover and steel wool.

    • 5

Sand the surface with 400-grit wet/dry sandpaper. Rinse off the sanding dust and let the surface dry for two hours.

    • 6

Mix a two-part epoxy paint according to the package instructions. This usually is done by mixing equal amount of the two parts in a separate can and thoroughly stirring.

    • 7

Apply the paint using a fine-bristle paintbrush. Press the paintbrush against the metal walls as you work so the bristles feather out. This prevents hard lines. Always stroke the brush in one direction. Allow the paint to dry for one hour before applying a second coat.

Leave the second coat of paint to cure for 24 hours, then apply a third coat of paint.
