How to Seal Loft Doors

A loft door opens from the floor up into the loft itself and is commonly called a hatch door. As lofts tend to be attic spaces, often without insulation, this can bring cold drafts to the floors below. If you have a loft door where you can feel cold air gushing through, it is time to seal its opening. This is a simple process that uses basic weatherstripping, which can be found at any hardware store.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 1-inch self-adhesive weatherstripping
  • Utility knife

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the opening where the loft door sits with a measuring tape. This is measurement A.

    • 2

Measure the length of the opening where the loft door sits and subtract 2 inches from this measurement. This is measurement B.

    • 3

Cut two strips of 1-inch self-adhesive weatherstripping that match measurement A with a utility knife.

    • 4

Cut two strips of 1-inch self-adhesive weatherstripping that match measurement B.

    • 5

Apply each strip of weatherstripping onto the corresponding edge of the molding where the door will sit when it is closed. When the door is closed, the weatherstripping creates a seal that prevents cold air from escaping.
