How to Install a Crown Molding Baseboard on Drywall

Crown molding installs on your wall's drywall where it intersects with the floor. The molding attaches to the wall with brad nails -- small, thin nails also used to install molding along the floor and doorways. Installing this type of a molding is not difficult, but it will require a few advanced cutting skills. If you have the right tools, which include a brad nail gun, you'll find this project reasonably accessible even if you have little experience in home repair.

Instructions

Measure the wall with a tape measure to figure out how much molding you need. Place the first section of molding along the wall. If the section does not extend the entire length of the wall, cut it at a 45-degree angle using a miter saw. Cut the next section at an opposite angle, so the two cuts fit together when installed along the row.

Set this first section of crown molding on the wall right where it intersects with the floor. Hold the molding in place with one hand, or have an assistant hold the molding in place for you. Brad nail the molding to the drywall by placing a brad nail every foot or so along the molding. Use a brad nailer to drive the brad nails through the molding.

Set the second section along the wall with the end flush to the first section. Brad nail this section to the drywall, placing a brad nail every foot or so. Continue to install sections until you reach the corner of the wall. When you reach the corner, measure and cut two sections to fit together at the corner, at a 45-degree angle.

Place the first section along the wall and nail it into place with the brad nailer. Fit the second section along the other wall so the end sits flush with the first section. Nail the second section into the wall with the brad nailer. Continue to add sections to complete the crown molding installation.
