How to Install Handrails on a Second Floor Hallway

At times, you might need to install a handrail in your home to create a safer environment. Handrails can be a necessary addition to your second floor hallway for occupants who might not be steady on their feet, especially after lying in bed. The key to installing a handrail is to measure for height and length and to ensure it is level.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length that you want your handrail with your measuring tape. Purchase the handrail kit at a hardware store. They come in many styles and lengths. They also come with the hardware.

    • 2

Measure the person who will be using the handrail the most. Measure from the floor to about halfway between their wrist and elbow. This is the height you want to have the handrail from the floor.

    • 3

Open the handrail hardware package and determine how many brackets are in the kit. Split the wall up by the number of brackets so they will be evenly dispersed. Using the measurement you learned in Step 2 and your tape measure, measure from the floor to the spot where each bracket should go on the wall. Mark those spots on the wall with a pencil.

Drill the holes for the screws that will hold the brackets. Screw the brackets to the wall with the your screwdriver and the provide screws. Fasten the actual railing to the brackets. Use the level to make sure the railing is straight. Adjust it if it is not.
