How to Make Laminate Floors Scratch Resistant

Laminate flooring can be a lovely addition to your home, but it can also lose its appeal when it becomes scratched and scuffed. Scratches can appear on your floor over time from moving furniture, dropping heavy items and general wear. Remove all furniture from the room. Sweep the entire floor with a dust mop to remove all dirt and debris. Combine about 1 cup of bleach with 1 gallon of water in a bucket and use this solution to mop the floor. Wipe with a towel to dry.

Fill in any existing scratches with a laminate floor repair kit. You can choose a kit that is specifically matched to the color of your flooring or use a generic kit that works on any floor. Some kits use acrylic or latex putty while others use wax crayons or pencils. You should use a kit with putty if the scratches in the floor are deep. Crayons and pencils work best on minor scratches.

Replace the mop head on your mop with one that is brand new. If you do not have a brand new mop head, be sure that the one you are using is completely clean and contains no dirt or debris.

Apply a thin coat of wax to the floor using a mop. Start in one corner of the room and work in small sections to cover the entire floor. Apply two to three thin coats of wax, waiting at least one hour in between coats. The wax will act as a barrier over your laminate floor, protecting it from future scratches.
