How to Turn off the Water to an Oil-Fired Boiler

An oil-fired burner uses oil as a combustion source to heat a water supply. The heated water vapor is then distributed throughout the building via a series of ducts. An oil-fired boiler should never be run without water in the system because the boiler will overheats and become damaged. However, if you're conducting maintenance or won't be using the boiler for a while, you may choose to turn off the water supply.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the boiler's thermostat all the way down and shut off the breaker that powers it to make sure it can't operate with the water off.

    • 2

Locate the water supply pipe that goes into the boiler. This supplies the boiler with water that it stores in a reservoir.

    • 3

Close the valve on the supply pipe. It normally looks like a mini lever that prevents water from coming through the pipe. Some boiler models have several intake pipes, in which case each individual valve needs closing to turn off the water completely.
