How to Move Heavy Furniture With the Hump Strap Technique

If you've moved heavy furniture, you know how tiring it can be and how easy it is to damage walls and doorways by bumping into them. Trying to lift and move heavy items places you at risk for back, arm and shoulder injuries -- not to mention aches in your hands. Hand and finger muscles are not intended to support heavy weights for long periods of time. If you have a pair of hump straps and a helper, you can use leverage more effectively to move your heavy furniture quickly and safely.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the middle of each hump strap under the furniture item near the edge. Try to separate the length of the piece into thirds with the two straps.

    • 2

Bend at your knees, keeping your back straight.

    • 3

Place the looped ends of your strap around your forearms and have your partner do the same.

    • 4

Place your hands flat against the sides of the furniture or around the corners to stabilize it.

    • 5

Give your partner the signal to lift. Push from your legs to lift the load.

    • 6

Walk the furniture where it needs to go. Take small steps, and communicate regularly with your partner to provide directions.

    • 7

Position the furniture, lowering it into place by slowly bending your knees until the item touches the ground.

    • 8

      Remove the hump straps.
