It is possible that the second stage was never programmed or accidentally cancelled. To check the current settings of the second stage, touch the "Schedule" button and then "Edit" button. Choose one day of the week, starting with Monday. Then choose the second stage (for example, "leave"); that stage will now blink in the screen. Verify that a number exists next to the "Heat" and "Cool" temperature arrows. If only two dash marks (--) show, the temperature was never programmed. Repeat the process to verify the settings of the second stage on each additional day of the week.
The second stage will come on if the house temperature has reached two to three degrees above (for air conditioning) or below (for heat) the specified temperature. If the preset temperature in the second stage of the schedule is too close to the home temperature during that specified amount of time, the second stage will not come on. To edit, press the "Schedule" button on the touch screen, choose "Edit" and then check each day you want to edit (such as, Monday through Sunday). Then choose your second stage (for example, "leave"). Move the arrow keys up and down to select the desired temperature; choose a temperature that is more than a few degrees from the average house temperature during that time of day. Press any additional stages that you want to edit or press "Done." "Saving Changes" will appear.
If someone in your home has moved the temperature up or down, and placed that temperature on "Hold," it will override the settings saved in the second stage. Look on the thermostat screen for a "Hold Temperature" or "Permanent Hold" indicator. To remove the hold, press the "Cancel" key and the schedule will resume.
Ensure the Trane thermostat is not partially locked. When partially locked, many features on the Trane thermostat are not operable. Users can change the temperature, but not access the schedule and second stage to check it. To unlock the screen, press the up-and-down arrow key to the right of the number in the lower right and choose "0." Also verify that the thermostat is not low on batteries; "LO Batt" flashes in the screen. To install batteries, pull the thermostat off the wall, unscrew the battery cover and insert three fresh AAA batteries.
