The Best Way to Point the Eyeball Fitting in an Above Ground Pool

The "eyeball" fitting is actually the return valve in the water filtration system in an above-ground swimming pool. It returns clean water to the pool after it has been removed by the skimmer and filtered, and can be adjusted so that it points nearly straight up or nearly straight down and all points in between. It also can move side to side. Its positioning can have a profound effect on the cleanliness of your pool's water.

Instructions

    • 1

Point the eyeball fitting straight down if the pool is extremely murky. This will deliver clean water to the bottom of the pool and push the dirty water to the top, where it will be sucked in by the skimmer and filtered. The eyeball should also be pointed down if you use a pool alarm when the pool isn't in use to prevent false alarms.

Point the eyeball fitting to either side, toward the wall, if you have a vacuum cleaner (sometimes called a creepy-crawly). Pointing the eyeball down may create turbulence that will repulse the cleaner, leaving a part of your pool bottom uncleaned.

Point the eyeball fitting straight across the pool if you have a circular pool. This will create a whirlpool effect that will gather debris in the center of the pool for easier hand skimming. In a square pool, it can be pointed straight across the surface to push surface debris toward the skimmer basket.
