How to Frame an Attic Opening Crawl Hole

Once you cut the hole out for your attic stairs, it is necessary to frame the opening. Framing an attic opening crawl hole properly provides a sturdy method of hanging your attic stairs. Attic holes do not have anything to attach to at each end and sometimes only on one side. Framing the hole is much like framing a doorway. It is necessary to have headers at each end as well as jambs on each side of the opening.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the step ladder under the attic opening crawl hole and climb into the attic. Measure between the joists at each end of the opening with a tape measure, if the opening did not require cutting a joist. Write the measurements down. If you had to cut a joist that was in the center of the opening, you will need to cut two boards for each end to serve as headers. For this type of installation, measure between the two uncut joists at each end of the opening.

    • 2

Cut two 2-inch-by-6-inch boards to the measurement with a circular saw, if you did not have to remove a joist for the hole. If a joist was removed, cut four boards to your measurements.

    • 3

Measure the ends of the cut joist to the end of the opening, if a joist was cut. There should be at least 3-inches between the opening and the end of the cut joist. If necessary cut the end of the joist with a hand saw so you have the necessary room to install the double header.

    • 4

Place one of the cut boards in between the joists at one end of the opening. The board should be at the edge of the opening. Nail through the side of the joists and into the end of the board with 16d nails and a hammer. You should place three nails through each end of the board. Repeat for the opposite end.

    • 5

Position one board against the cut joist and in between the two uncut joists, if you had to remove a joist for the opening. Nail the board in place with three nails through each end. Drive three nails through the face of the board and into the end of the cut joist. Place the second board against the first, and drive three nails through each end and three nails through the face of the board. Repeat for the opposite end.

    • 6

Measure the distance between the new header boards along the side of the opening that has no joist. Transfer the measurement to a 2-inch-by-6-inch board and cut the board to size.

    • 7

Place the cut board in between the two header boards. Drive three nails through the header boards and into each end of the side board to complete your framing.
