How to Extend a Sump Pump Pipe to the Front of a House

Sump pumps protect your home against flooding by pumping water away from the foundation and pushing it elsewhere to drain safely. If the end of the sump pump pipe isn't placed correctly, the water can pool back toward the house and cause flooding. If you need to extend the pipe to the front of the house, you'll need some basic materials, but it is a realistic do-it-yourself project.

Things You'll Need

  • Stakes
  • String
  • Shovel
  • PVC piping and connectors
  • PVC primer
  • PVC cement

Instructions

    • 1

Plan the route that the pipe needs to take from its current location to the front of your house. The route should be clear of any obstructions, so avoid going over the driveway if possible.

    • 2

Mark the route you chose by driving stakes into the lawn every few feet and tying string to the stakes.

    • 3

Dig a trench along the string line using a shovel. The trench only needs to be about seven or eight inches deep for it to comfortably fit the pipe extension. Pull out the string and stakes once you're done.

    • 4

Position PVC piping along the trench. This verifies you have all the extensions and connector pieces that you need before fastening them. Add elbow joints as needed to navigate turns.

    • 5

Apply a primer to the end of the current drain pipe and the first piece of the extension. Add PVC cement to both and then connect them, holding the pieces in place. The cement dries in a few seconds, and the pieces should be firmly connected.

    • 6

Connect the rest of the piping with the primer and PVC cement. For best results, the piping should be on a slight downward slope to prevent water from back-washing toward the pump.

    • 7

Run the pump once the piping is done to verify the water is successfully traveling to the front of the house through the pipe extension. Make repairs or alterations as necessary.

    • 8

Shovel soil into the trench to hide the piping. Keep the last few inches of pipe exposed to help keep it from being blocked by dirt.
