How to Get a Shiny Lacquer Finish

Lacquer is a durable finish that is often used on wood furniture. It is made of plasticizing agents, solvents, pigments and resins that give it a typically glossy shine. If you have furniture that is looking worn or aged, applying a lacquer finish to it helps restore its appearance and make it look newer. Lacquer is a flammable solvent, so care is always needed when using it to prevent fume inhalation or fire. However, the results make the extra care worth it.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the furniture outside or into a garage for maximum ventilation and to reduce the risk of damaging anything in the house. Place a plastic drop cloth under it to avoid staining the floor.

    • 2

Wash the furniture with a soft sponge and an oil soap to remove any dirt or dust that interferes with the wood finish. Dry the piece with a clean rag.

    • 3

Apply a lacquer primer over the wood with a paint sprayer or brush. Let the primer sit overnight to dry.

    • 4

Spray on a lacquer-based paint using the paint sprayer. Once the first coat dries, apply a second coat for best results. The lacquer in the paint provides a shiny, glossy look for the wood.
