How to Cut Your Tub to Make a Walk-In Shower

Shut the water off in the home by turning the water valve at your water heater to the closed position, or in a clockwise motion.

Break through the walls around the top edge of the tub with a hammer, and pull away the drywall until you can see behind and down the tub walls. Use a flashlight to look into the walls and locate pipes. When you see the pipes behind the wall, make a mark on the tub walls with a marker, so you can avoid the pipes while cutting.

Cut down and through the center of the tub's back wall with a reciprocal saw, avoiding the area with the pipe if applicable. Cut the tub wall in this area with a razor if necessary, and use extreme caution with the saw when you approach this area.

Locate the tub drainpipe. It is underneath the tub drain in your flooring joists. Cut right through the pipe with the reciprocal saw.

Cut through the tub itself with the reciprocal saw, slicing the tub in half for easier removal, if necessary. Remove the tub one half at a time from the bathroom. It will slide out once the drainpipe is cut.
