How to Install a Toilet Onto Rough Basement Plumbing

The rough-in area is a prepared part of the floor in your house that includes the piping and bolts necessary to hook up a toilet. The rough-in area of your basement can accommodate the bowl and tank of your toilet as long as proper installation procedures are followed. You can install your toilet in your basement without the aid of a plumber, even if you have never attempted the task previously.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a towel down on the floor beside the established rough-in area in your basement where the toilet installation will take place.

    • 2

Turn the bowl section of your toilet so that the bottom faces upward. Lay the toilet onto the towel. Insert the included wax ring into the open area on the base of the toilet's bowl section, and push it in until it stays in place and doesn't fall out.

    • 3

Turn the toilet section back over and align it over the two bolts sticking up from the rough-in area so that the bolts will enter and go up through the pre-made holes on the base of the toilet. Lower the bowl section down into place over the bolts.

    • 4

Gather up the toilet's included nuts and washers and tighten these over the bolts using an adjustable wrench.

    • 5

Position the toilet's tank piece over the installed bowl section so that the two bolts reaching up through the bowl will slide into the pre-made holes on the tank's bottom. Lower the tank into place.

    • 6

Use a Phillips screwdriver to tighten the screws on the outer area of the toilet's tank.

    • 7

Find the open coupling on the side of the toilet's tank piece. Slide the water supply tube into this coupling, then tighten the coupling with your adjustable wrench.

    • 8

Find the water supply valve at the toilet's base. It will be on the rear. Rotate this valve counterclockwise to turn on the water flow.
