How to Install a Brick Stoop on Concrete Slab

Brick stoops are not usually made of brick all the way down to the ground. Bricks are usually a facade placed over a sturdy stoop-shaped foundation. Concrete is one of the best foundation materials for a brick stoop, so if you have a concrete slab that you would like to turn into a brick stoop, you are already halfway to your goal.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the concrete slab. Wash it down first with a hose, then scrub it with a stiff brush dipped in water to wipe away the dust and grime. Rinse it with a hose one more time, and wait for the stoop to dry.

    • 2

Lay out the first course of bricks around the side of the stoop. Space the bricks ½-inch apart to accommodate the mortar joint. This will help you visualize how the bricks should lay in front of the stoop before you get started; thus, so when you have put mortar on the first brick, you will know just where to place it.

    • 3

Mix the mortar. Follow the manufacturer's directions for proportions of mortar to water. Mortar should be mixed with a mortar mixer attachment on a drill.

    • 4

Apply mortar to the first brick, using a trowel. Mortar should be placed only on the areas where the brick will be touching the concrete foundation or another brick. Any portion of the brick that will be facing the outside and is visible to anyone looking at the stoop should not have any mortar.

    • 5

Press the brick into the side of the stoop and press on it firmly so the mortar squeezes out the sides.

    • 6

Apply mortar to the next brick and place it beside the first brick. Repeat this step until the first course of bricks has been laid around the stoop.

    • 7

Scrape off excess mortar from the bricks using a trowel.

    • 8

Continue to apply mortar to bricks and lay the second course of bricks on top of the first. Scrape excess mortar from the joints with the trowel as before. Lay courses of bricks until the side of the stoop has been covered in brick. Once the top of the stoop has been reached, lay courses of bricks horizontally across the top of the stoop, until the stoop has been completely covered.

Wait until the mortar has cured for one week, then clean the mortar dust with a stiff brush and water.
