How Do I Fix It If My Water Softener Has Air in the Lines?

A water softener with an air leak in the brine line will spurt air right after you turn on the faucet. While each brand of water softener varies in construction, the air leak is most likely a loose connection or fitting, which reduces suction through the line. A simple test with a bucket of water helps locate the air leak so you can make the necessary adjustments. Always consult the user manual specific to your water softener to locate the parts needing adjustment.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the valve fitting by finding the 90-degree-angle connection near the top of the safety float column. Disconnect the brine line from the valve fitting with a wrench and submerge the end of the hose into a bucket filled with water.

    • 2

Set the water softener to the “Brine Draw” function by pushing the "Regeneration" or "Extra Regeneration" button or by pushing an inset button with a screwdriver. Read the user manual for your system to determine the location of the regeneration button on your water softener.

Keep the tube in the water at all times and watch it closely to see if water is being pulled into the water softener unit or if the tube remains clear. Remove the valve fitting from the water softener with a wrench and reattach it to ensure it has a tight and secure fit if water does not pull through the tube.

Check all connections around the safety float at the top of the safety float column if water from the bucket does pull through the tube. Remove and tighten all connections with a wrench, including the overflow connection at the top of the brine tank. Adjust the rubber float in the float column by pulling it downward so it rests below the overflow drain to stop the water before it enters the drain.

Reattach the brine line to connection to the valve fitting and run the water softener to verify the air leak is gone. Repeat the steps, if needed, until the air leak disappears.
