How Do I Vent a Kitchen Sink and Drain When Redoing Them?

If you are redoing your kitchen sink drains, it is a good time to install your drain vent. The vent simply allows air into the pipes, without letting the drain gases escape by means of a one-way valve. This vent just installs on the drain pipe like any other fitting. If you have installed piping fixtures and fitting before, this process will sound familiar and it should only take about an hour to finish.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the sink and the sink drain pipe as you normally would, and as indicated by your sink's installation instructions. Install the P-trap by connecting it to the sink's drain tail pipe and tightening the P-trap connector.

    • 2

Locate the home's main drain line, which extends out from the wall right beneath the sink. This normally connects to the end of the P-trap; however, now your new vent will install between the P-trap and this pipe.

    • 3

Install a T-fitting in between the home's drain pipe and the P-trap. To accomplish this, simply connect the end of the home's drain pipe to one end of the T-fitting and the end of the P-trap to the other end of the fitting.

Place the vent into the middle inlet on the T-fitting. Disassemble the T-fitting and air vent, coat the fitting and pipes with PVC cement and reassemble. Let the PVC cement dry for four hours, or as indicated by the manufacturer's label, before using the drain.
