How to Replace a Pull Cord in Hunter Blinds

A pair of cords run through the blinds and travel over a system of pulleys in the head rail to allow you to adjust the height of the blinds to suit your needs. Over time, the cords wear out. Finding the right diameter cord may be the most difficult part of replacing the cords. If you can’t find cords at a store that sells blinds, look for cording in the notions department of a fabric store. Some retailers sell restringing kits for Hunter blinds.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the fully extended blinds as well as the width. You need two cords that are each twice the blind’s length plus its width.

    • 2

Open the latches that hold the blinds in position on the windows. Take the blinds down and lay them on a flat work surface. For most blinds it’s easier to thread the cord replacement if they are lying as if they were pulled up.

    • 3

Remove the cord lock and the end caps from from the top and bottom rails. Slide the top and bottom rails off the pleated portion of the shade by pulling the rails to one side or the other. Cut the old cords and remove them. Save the plastic washers on the bottom of the cords and the cord guides on the top of the shades.

    • 4

Thread one end of one piece of cord into a needle with a large eye. Guide the needle and thread from the top of the blind to the bottom using the holes in the cellular material as your guide.

    • 5

Slip a plastic washer on the cord. Tie a triple knot in the end of the cord.

    • 6

Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the other side of the blind. Slide the bottom rail back in place to hide the knots. Replace its end caps.

    • 7

Thread the cord through the cord guides on the top of the blinds. Set the cord guides over the holes where the cord emerges from the blind. Pull the two cords to the right top side of the blind. Slide the top rail in place over them. Thread the two cords into the end piece with the cord lock bails. Pass the cord under the tab and out the opening as you perform this step to keep the cords from twisting.

    • 8

Snap this end piece in position on the right side of the blind’s head rail. Put the other end place in place on the head rail.

    • 9

Hang the blinds in their brackets. Raise and lower the blinds to ensure they are working properly.

    • 10

Measure 2 inches down from the cord lock when the blinds are extended. Attach a cord condenser ball at that location to secure the cords. Also attach a larger cord to the opposite side of the cord condenser ball to use as the actual blind pull.

    • 11

Run the end of the larger cord through a cord pull tassel. Tie a knot in the cord and pull the cord pull down over the knot to cover it.
