How to Cut Styrofoam Foil-Backed Insulation Sheets

Foil-backed Styrofoam insulation sheets can reduce home energy costs by reducing the transfer of heat to your living space. Foil backing provides a reflective surface, called a radiant barrier, to enhance the insulating properties of Styrofoam. It's most effective for limiting downward heat flow, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Because these insulation sheets are rigid, you can cut them as necessary to fill spaces between wall studs or attic floor joists.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area where you want to place the Styrofoam foil-backed insulation sheet.

    • 2

Transfer the measurements to the insulation sheet and mark the sheet, foil side up, at both ends.

    • 3

Lay a metal straightedge on the insulation sheet at the measurement marks. Cut through one edge of the sheet, using the utility knife. Continue the cut to the opposite end using the straightedge as a guide.
