How to Make a Dryer Vent Hood Slide Over the Pipe

Dryer vent hoods protect the vent -- which then allows air to escape effectively -- while preventing rain and moisture from entering the vent from the outside. The hood is important to the overall effectiveness of your venting system, so having a properly fitting vent hood should be a priority. If the vent hood is too small, you'll never get it over the vent pipe. Even an appropriately-sized hood may need some manipulation when you're sliding it over the pipe.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the diameter of the pipe with a tape measure to ensure the dryer vent hood will fit. If the diameter if the pipe is larger than that of the vent hood, you'll need a new vent hood to fit the pipe effectively.

    • 2

Rub a lubricant or grease around the outside rim of the pipe and the inside rim of the vent hood. This reduces friction so the hood slides over the pipe with less effort.

    • 3

Push the end of the vent hood over the pipe, then turn the vent hood back and forth like a steering wheel as you push it over the pipe. The combination of forward force, turning motion and the grease should be enough to get the vent hood over the pipe securely. Wipe away excess grease or lubricant with a rag once the hood is properly in place.

Wrap foil tape around the joint between the vent hood and the pipe to ensure a tight seal with no leaking.
