How to Adjust Bi-fold Louvered Doors

Bifold louvered doors slide back and forth in a track, but the doors sometimes need adjustments to open and close smoothly. Identifying the cause of the functionality problems is key to the repair process. Common issues include loose screws, improper alignment or brackets that need adjustments. Working through the potential causes one at a time allows you to make only the necessary adjustments to get the louvered doors back on track and functioning properly without making the problem worse.

      Open and close the doors a few times to get an idea of where they are catching or misaligned. View the doors in an open and closed position to see if they look misaligned or in need of an adjustment.

      Measure the gap between the doors at the joint and at the outer edges. Measure at the top, middle and bottom to determine if the doors are hanging evenly.

      Open the doors completely so you are able to loosen the setscrew, which is located on the top bracket and holds the piece in place along the top outer corner where the door attaches to the frame. Slide the bracket along the top to make the necessary adjustments to better align the doors.

      Tighten the setscrew when you get it to the correct spot. Test the doors again to determine how well they open and close. Look at the alignment again to see if the louvered doors look even. Make additional adjustments as needed by loosening the setscrew and moving the piece again.

      Tighten or replace the bottom bracket if the old piece is broken or loose. The bracket is located at the bottom outer corners of the closet doors.

      Replace the rollers or pivot pins if the old ones are no longer working properly. The pivot pins hold the doors bifold doors in the top and bottom brackets, while the rollers are located along the top of the door to guide the door down the track. If these pieces aren't in proper condition, the door may drag or sit in the frame incorrectly.
