Remove the hinge pins from the door by sliding a thin screwdriver between the hinge and the head of the pin. Lift the door from the hinges. Remove each side of the hinge, from the door and the door frame, using a screwdriver. Set the screws aside.
Sand each hinge with a piece of sandpaper, removing any existing paint. Wash the hinges thoroughly with a degreaser or detergent. A detergent may not remove all of the grime and dirt that you must take off so that the paint will properly adhere. After the hinges are cleaned, dry them fully with a towel.
Lay the hinge pieces on a piece of cardboard outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Apply a coat of metal primer. The primer is easiest to apply if it comes in an aerosol can. Use a smooth sweeping motion when applying the primer, holding the can about 10 inches away from the hinge. Allow the primer to dry, which typically takes less than 30 minutes.
Apply a metal paint of your choice. Like the metal primer, use a metal paint that comes in an aerosol can for easy application. Hold the can about 10 inches away from the hinge when spraying. Use a smooth and constant motion to apply an light, even coat. Never hold the can in one place for more than a second when spraying; the paint will glob up in one spot if you do. Let the paint dry and apply a second coat. If the hinge is not fully painted, apply a third coat.
Reattach the hinges and door once the hinges have completely dried.
