How to Fix a Sticky Door Lock Button

A push-in button lock is located on a door knob and can be easily pressed to lock the door. Over time and through continuous use, it's possible for dirt, grime and other sticky buildup to gather inside the lock and cause the button to stick while it is pressed in. While you can call a professional to help you deal with this problem, you can save money and time by simply treating the stuck door lock button yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper clip or bobby pin
  • Screwdriver
  • Pressurized air duster
  • Spray lubricant

Instructions

    • 1

Unstick the lock by pushing a thin object like a straightened paper clip or bobby pin through the small hole on the opposite side of the push-button on the door knob. This often unsticks the lock button by itself.

    • 2

Remove the entire door knob using a screwdriver if Step 1 doesn't work.

    • 3

Part the two sides of the door knob, and peek inside. Spray the entire inside of the lock with a pressurized air duster to knock any loose debris that can be affecting the button lock.

    • 4

Coat all the mechanics inside the lock with a spray lubricant to loosen them and allow the parts to better work together. Turn the door knob from side to side as you spray so the lubricant can get in between the parts, as well. Press the stuck lock, and wiggle the knob back and forth until it pops up.

Re-attach the door knob to the door.
