How to Modify the Suction on a Dust Collector

Anyone who hates dust knows the convenience of a dust collector. Instead of lugging out a full-sized vacuum to suck up dust behind an appliance or on a bookshelf, just grab the portable dust collector and the dirt is gone in seconds. While the motor certainly isn't as strong as a regular vacuum on a home unit, it is usually more than enough to get the job done when it is working properly. Most dust collectors are adjustable in their suction as well.

Look for a selector switch on the side or the top of the dust collector. Some models have varying motor speeds that increase or decrease suction. The power switch itself may slide forward or back between the various speeds to modify the suction power.

Plug the dust collector into the wall while using it if your model has that option. As the battery gets older, it gets less effective at powering the device and some suction power gets lost as a result. Plugging the dust collector directly into the wall helps get maximum power and suction from the motor.

Plug an attachment into the dust collector. Attachments make it simpler to get to hard-to-reach places and they also modify the suction of the machine. An attachment with a smaller hole increases the suction in that smaller space, while a wider attachment has less suction but covers a wider area.

Empty the storage bag of the dust collector regularly. If it gets filled or clogs the filter, the dust collector can't operate as well and suction power is lost. An empty bag and clean filter helps maximize the device's suction capabilities.
