How to Keep the Boiler From Running Every Time I Use the Hot Water

A boiler is what makes the hot water in some homes possible. Boilers heat water in a supply tank to create steam. That steam circulates through a pipe and radiator system to heat the home and in some cases heat the home water supply. A boiler can heat only so much hot water at a time, so it has to fire up and heat more water when the supply tank runs low from daily use, such as when you shower or wash clothes or dishes. If the boiler turns on every time you use hot water, try making some adjustments to lessen the boiler's activity level.

Instructions

Reduce the amount of hot water you use at any given time by shortening your showers and using the washing machine or dishwasher only when hot water isn't being used elsewhere in the house. The boiler won't need to turn on as often if you space your moderate hot water use evenly throughout a day.

Check the boiler system for leaks. Even small water leaks from a pipe or hose results in lost heat as well as lost water, and this causes the boiler to work harder to compensate. Repair any leaks to help reduce the boiler workload. This helps it run more efficiently so it doesn't have to switch on as often.

Install a more efficient boiler if you still run out of hot water regularly or if the boiler still needs to turn on whenever you use hot water. Your boiler may be undersized for your home. Installing a new boiler is a complicated process, and professional assistance is recommended.
