How to Install Stairtek Retread

Stairtrek retreads allow you to update the look and beauty of your staircase without removing the staircase and starting over. The retreads fit over the top of your existing steps. If you have carpeting on the stairs, you must remove the carpeting, underpadding and tack strips before starting. The best results when installing Stairtrek retread involve using the Stairtrek riser replacements to finish the look of the stairs.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all staples or nails from the steps. Sweep the steps off to remove all dirt and debris. The Stairtek retreads use construction adhesive; removing dirt and dust ensures a secure application.

    • 2

Measure the distance between the face of the riser and the nose overhang of the step above the riser with a tape measure. Subtract 3/4-inch from the measurement to determine the thickness necessary for your shims. The Stairtek riser is 3/4-inch thick.

    • 3

Place the end of the tape measure on the inside left of the riser and measure to the inside right end of the riser. Transfer the measurement to the shim. Cut two pieces of shim to the measurement with a circular saw.

    • 4

Nail on shim across the bottom of the first riser with finishing nails. Nail the second shim at the top of the riser, below the first step. Repeat the process for all risers on your staircase.

    • 5

Measure the height of the riser from the floor to the bottom of the first step overhang. Measure the distance between the two ends of the riser once again to ensure the proper width for the new riser.

    • 6

Transfer the height measurement to the new riser. Cross-cut the riser with a cross-cutting blade in your circular saw. Transfer the width measurement and cut the riser with a standard cutting blade in the circular saw.

    • 7

Apply construction adhesive to the back of the riser with a caulk gun, running the bead one inch from the top and bottom edge. Insert one end of the riser against the face of the shims and press the opposite end into place. Drive four finishing nails along the top and bottom of the riser.

    • 8

Measure from the back of the first step where it meets the second riser to overhang. Subtract 1/4-inch from the measurement. This is the height of the new retread. Measure between the two ends of the step for the proper length.

    • 9

Transfer the height measurement to the retread and cross-cut the retread. Transfer the length to the retread and cut it to size. Apply several beads of construction adhesive to the bottom of the retread and a bead in the corner at the retread overhang.

    • 10

Position the Stairtek retread onto the step, with the overhang against the new riser. Drive four finishing nails along the back length of the retread.

    • 11

Continue measuring and cutting the risers and retreads just like the first set. Install all as you did the first ones until your staircase is complete.
