How to Clean the Propane Line on a Weber Grill

Weber has been a name in grill manufacturing since 1952 when George Stephen welded together two metal buoy halves to create a makeshift grilling device. Each modern Weber grill has different maintenance needs depending on whether it is powered by gas or charcoal. The propane line on a propane grill often gets spattered with grease from the grilling process and regular cleaning helps remove deposits. This requires care to prevent damage to the line.
  1. Safety First

    • While cleaning a propane grill is not inherently dangerous, care is always needed whenever working around any source of fuel. Check that the grill is turned off and then close the valve leading from the propane tank to the grill. Unhook the propane line from the tank once the valve is closed. This ensures propane gas isn't in the line during the cleaning process. While propane is stable, it will ignite and could explode if you're not cautious. Never clean or perform any maintenance on a propane grill near any source of excessive heat or open flame.

    Safe Cleaners

    • The inside of the propane lines shouldn't require cleaning so the main concern is grease and dirt buildup on the outside. As a result, warm water and a mild degreaser are often enough to get your propane lines looking like new again. Use a soft scrubbing sponge soaked in warm water and a few drops of dish soap to wipe down the lines and eliminate any debris from them. Stubborn stains or deposits might require a nylon scrub brush.

    Avoidances

    • Avoid using steel wool or any type of heavily corrosive pad on the propane line because it might damage the line and a propane leak is potentially dangerous. Likewise, corrosive cleaning agents such as bleach or ammonia should never be necessary when cleaning propane lines. Likewise, never mix any kind of bleach or ammonia cleaning product because this results in a toxic gas that is potentially deadly if inhaled.

    Portholes

    • Clean the portholes and burners that the propane lines are connected to at the same time as the lines themselves to keep your grill in top condition. A damp, soft nylon brush is often enough to remove grease buildup that leads to blockages. This should be conducted every few months, depending on how often you use the grill. Follow all maintenance instructions for your Weber model for best results.
