How to Balance Out Heat With a Thermostat in a Bad Spot in the House

Having a thermostat that mounts close to a front doorway or in an odd place downstairs sometimes results in the upstairs of a home remaining too hot while the downstairs doesn't seem to heat up comfortably. This is also a problem in single level homes because rooms farther away from the thermostat seem warmer than the rest of the house. Balancing out heat with a thermostat in a bad spot in the house is possible without spending money on a separate system or relocating the thermostat.

Instructions

Turn the “Fan” setting on the thermostat to the “On” position. The fan keeps circulating the home's air, which helps balance out the heat. This method is more effective in a single-story ranch style home.

Go upstairs and partially close heat registers, if you have a two-story home. Warm air rises, and closing the upstairs vents halfway results in the entire house heating primarily from the downstairs registers. Initially your heating system will run a bit longer, but it should go back to cutting on and off regularly as before.

Open curtains and blinds in south facing windows during the day. The heat from the sun helps to warm both stories of the house, so you'll use a little less heat in the evenings.
