Use of Aerosol in Acrylic Sinks

Acrylic sinks are prefabricated units made from plastic or a combination of plastic and other materials. Two primary types of aerosol products exist for use with sinks and bathtubs in general, including acrylic sinks: cleaners and repair or finishing products. Understanding the use of aerosol in acrylic sinks requires basic knowledge of acrylic sinks themselves, as well as available aerosol products designed for use in acrylic sinks. Always read aerosol product instructions and your sink manual before use.
  1. Acrylic Sinks

    • Acrylic sinks come prefabricated from the manufacturer. As a homeowner, you purchase and install these sinks as a single unit, much like a prefabricated shower stall or bathtub. The finish on acrylic sinks makes them stain-resistant, though according to Mary Fisher Knott, author of “Kitchen and Bath Design,” acrylic damages easily under high heat. Knott calls acrylic sinks the least durable type of sink. The plastic surface of acrylic exhibits impact damage more readily than harder materials like ceramics or metal. Because acrylic sinks damage easily, you may find yourself frequently retouching them.

    Aerosol Solutions

    • Aerosol solutions present means of retouching, refinishing or repairing sink surfaces. These products exist for all types of bathtubs and sinks, including units made from plastics like acrylic. Aerosol solutions for sinks and tubs usually contain acrylic themselves and some type of epoxy or adhesive. When sprayed on damaged parts of a sink or tub surface, this aerosol mixture of acrylic and adhesive forms a hard surface to match that of the sink. Always wear gloves, goggles and a dust mask when working with aerosol solutions for sinks and tubs.

    Aerosol Cleaners

    • The name “aerosol cleaners” describes these products exactly: cleaners that come in aerosol cans. Myriad aerosol cleaners exist for all types of purposes, including wood polishers, all-purpose cleaners and those designed for use specifically with sinks, tubs and toilets. These cleaners usually constitute aerosolized versions of products also available as a liquid solution. Using them entails little more than following the directions provided by the manufacturer of the cleaning product. Always read manufacture's warnings and notes before using an aerosol cleaner on acrylic to ensure compatibility.

    Acrylic Care

    • While manufacturers of aerosol products claim you can safely use them with plastic sinks and tubs such as those made from acrylic, some sink and tub manufacturers disagree. Kohler recommends never using abrasive cleaners or aerosol products with its acrylic tubs and sinks. Always read the manufacturer's manual before using an aerosol product on your acrylic sink – look in particular for care instructions. Ignoring care instructions may void the warranty on your product. Various alternatives to aerosol products exist, including liquid epoxy solutions and liquid cleaners, both of which work just like aerosol products but apply as a liquid, not a spray product.
