How to Install a Backwards Sliding Glass Door Lock

Sliding glass doors are convenient for ducking in and out between the house and the patio or backyard. Sliding glass doors also serve as a point of entry for fresh air to flow throughout the home. However, they are susceptible to break-ins; and as a result, there are many makeshift methods to lock them. You can install a sturdy sliding glass door lock that is permanent, convenient to use and will not be misplaced or lost, like dowel rods or other items used to block the door.

Push a marker through each of the two screw holes and mark the mounting locations on the edge of the door.

    • 3

Hold the lock mechanism in place and push in the locking button with one hand while marking the spot where the tip of the locking rod strikes the stationary glass door. Remove the lock mechanism and set it aside.

Use a handheld drill to make holes of the diameter specified in the lock manufacturer’s directions. Drill exactly to the depth specified in the instructions to avoid striking and breaking the glass in the door.

Place the locking mechanism back in place at the bottom edge of the sliding glass door. Insert a screwdriver bit into the drill and drive the screws included with the lock mechanism into the holes and the edge of the door.
