How to Remove Pipe Scale From HDPE

HDPE pipes are made out of high-density polyethylene. The plastic is commonly used in home products like milk jugs and shopping bags, but it also is employed to create durable plastic piping. The advantage of HDPE piping is its lighter weight and resistance to rust or mold. Scale is also not a common problem with the piping and because of that, it requires less effort to remove than from its iron or steel counterparts.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the pipe in hot water and mild detergent to eliminate loose scale. Mineral deposits don't bond as well to HDPE pipes so it typically comes off with a little rubbing.

    • 2

Scrape the pipe with a wire brush to force stubborn scale off its surface.

    • 3

Apply a scale cleaner to the pipe and scrub with a scrubbing sponge or pad. Reuse the wire brush if necessary. Rinse the pipe thoroughly afterward so the solvents don't stay on the plastic.
