How to Fix a Gap in the Vent Under the Facade

Chimney facades sometimes get used to cover unsightly metal chimneys to give them the appearance of brick. Facades require careful installation to fully cover the actual chimney while not damaging it or impeding its function. Gaps in the chimney or the facade require sealing to ensure that the fireplace or stove vents properly. The base of the chimney is a common source of leaking because the flashing comes loose around the vent. Fixing a gap in this area requires some basic materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the area around the gap using a scrubbing sponge and several drops of liquid dish soap to remove any dirt or debris that could interfere with your repair. Let the area fully dry before continuing.

    • 2

Apply the basecoat of a roof sealer into the gap and the surrounding area with a trowel.

    • 3

Push a repair fabric into the gap so it presses tightly against the base coat. The cloth is often fiberglass-based and is useful in filling in gaps and stopping leaks.

    • 4

Spread on a topcoat over the repair fabric. This helps complete the gap-filling process and creates a tight seal with the surface around the repair.
