How to Repair an Uneven Caulk Seam on a Backsplash

An uneven caulk line between the backsplash and counter top makes the area look messy. The unevenness may also allow moisture to seep into the crack, causing damage to the wall behind. Repairing the caulk gives the joint a clean look while protecting the area. Before a new caulk bead can be put into place, the old caulk needs to be removed and the area cleaned in preparation for the new caulk. Tackle the prep work thoroughly for the best results.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a sharp utility knife at an angle so the blade cuts through the caulk at the joint. Slice along the caulking the entire length of the backsplash to loosen it for removal.

    • 2

Scrape off the caulk using a razor blade scraper. Slide the razor along the counter top and backsplash to release the old, uneven caulk. Work carefully if your counter top or backsplash is made from a soft stone, such as travertine or marble, as the tools can scratch or damage the surface.

    • 3

Brush out the joint with a cleaning brush to remove the leftover caulk pieces. Brush off the backsplash and counter top so the dust and debris from the caulk removal doesn't get on the new caulk. Wipe down the area with warm, soapy water to clean it out. Allow the joint to dry completely before applying the new caulk.

    • 4

Make a guide to ensure the new caulk is even using painter's tape. Place the tape along the backsplash and the countertop to create the borders for the caulk line. Check the tape lines to ensure they are level so you don't end up with uneven caulk lines again.

    • 5

Load silicone caulk in a caulk gun. Squeeze out a small amount on a piece of cardboard to ensure the gun is working properly.

    • 6

Squeeze a generous bead of caulk in the joint between the backsplash and countertop between the two tape lines. Use a finger to smooth out the caulk.

    • 7

Pull away the piece of tape on the backsplash that created the top portion of your guide. Recheck the caulk line to determine if it needs smoothing again. Carefully pull away the bottom piece of tape on the countertop.

    • 8

Smooth the caulk line one more time after both pieces of tape are removed to smooth out any ridges that formed along the tape.
