How to Install Stairwell Risers on an Open-End Stairwell

Sometimes stairwells on porches, decks and in the basement are built with no risers between the steps. Risers are the boards at the end of each step that close off the stairwell. These are sometimes left off for aesthetic reasons. Installing stairwell risers on an open-end stairwell requires some precision measuring. It is not necessary, or advised, to remove the steps unless they require replacement. Removing and reinstalling the steps weakens them and shortens their lifespan.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • 1-by-6-inch boards
  • Circular saw with standard blade
  • Rip cutting blade
  • Wood glue
  • Finishing nails

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the riser from one stringer to the next with a tape measure. The stringers are the two sides of the stairwell and provide the attaching platform for the steps and risers.

    • 2

Cut a piece of 1-by-6-inch board to the length measurement with a circular saw. Repeat the measuring and cutting process for each riser on the stairwell, numbering each riser with a pencil. Start at the riser from the floor to the first step as one, and progress up for each riser.

    • 3

Take a measurement from the floor, or concrete pad, to the bottom of the first stair tread with a tape measure. Measure at both ends of the stairs at the stair stringer. Transfer the measurement to the correct riser.

    • 4

Install a rip cutting blade into your circular saw, and cut the riser to the height mark. Repeat for each riser, measuring from the top of the step to the bottom of the next step and cutting the correct labeled riser to size.

    • 5

Position the riser onto the stringer between the steps. Ensure that the riser fits flush against the stringer on each end. Pull the riser out and apply a bead of wood glue to the stringers where the riser will install.

    • 6

Push the riser into place, ensuring it is flush against the stringer. Drive two finishing nails through each end of the riser and into the stringer with a hammer. Continue the process until you install all the risers.
