How to Check the Beam Supports in Your Basement

The metal pole that is a common sight in many basements is actually a support beam. Support beams may also be constructed of wood. Support beams help provide additional support to floor beams and floor joists. Checking your basement support beams once a year helps ensure that your house maintains its structural integrity. Damage to support beams isn’t common, but may occur if you have an insect problem, water damage or gaps between the support beams and floor joists.

Instructions

Look for evidence of water damage. Because your basement is the area in your house most vulnerable when it comes to flooding, it’s possible that your support beams may be rotted or damaged from water. Look mostly along the bottom half of the beam, as the top of the beam should be free from water damage. Both metal and wooden support beams can suffer from water damage. For wooden beams, HandymanUSA suggests pushing a screwdriver against the beam. If the screwdriver pierces the beam, it is unsafe.

Assess the beams for termite and other insect damage. If your support beams are made of metal, they are safe from insect damage. You may not visibly see termites or insects if they are present, but their damage is indicated by tiny holes and chewed wood.

Look for gaps between the support beam and the floor joists or beams. Fix gaps by tapping a shim into the gap.

Contact a structural engineer if your support beams appear damaged. Even if you have previous construction experience, replacing or repairing a support beam is dangerous and requires the assistance of a professional.
