How to Build a Wainscoting Base for Half Columns

Wainscoting is a series of wooden panels adorning the bottom of a wall. It is usable on columns, as well, and is useful for decorating purposes to add color and to make the column stand out more. Modern wainscoting often comes in kits to make the installation a simpler process, but you can also build your own paneling to act as a base for a column or half column. Once you have the wood, you just need some basic woodworking materials.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Use a miter box and a saw to cut wood moldings into equally sized rectangles. The moldings are available at lumber yards and they replicate the look of wainscoting. Measure the column and then the first molding you cut with a tape measure to ensure your subsequent samples are cut appropriately and are the same size.

    • 2

Wash off the bottom of the half column with warm water and mild detergent to remove any dirt or debris. Let the column dry fully before continuing.

    • 3

Attach a vertical piece of the molding to the column using wood adhesive. This makes it easier to attach and line up paneling on either side.

    • 4

Glue a panel on one side of the vertical piece using the adhesive. Once it dries, carefully hammer a nail through the vertical piece and into the edge of the panel to connect the two together and keep them tight. Attach the panel on the other side of the vertical piece in the same fashion. Continue with another panel and then another vertical piece until the half column is fully covered. The last piece likely needs cutting with a saw to fit a smaller space at the end of the column.

    • 5

Run a stud finder over the half column to locate any studs in it. Hammer nails through the panels into the studs to secure the wainscoting to the column more effectively.

Attach a chair rail molding to the top of the panels to complete the wainscoting effect and to give the paneling more decorative flair.
