How to Change a Wayne-Dalton Garage Lock

Wayne-Dalton uses two different types of exterior garage door locks on their wood and steel residential doors. The T handle lock uses two cables to secure the door, while the L handle uses the more traditional lock bars that extend through the vertical tracks. Sometimes, it is necessary to replace the garage door lock, because it doesn't work properly or it becomes seized. Changing a Wayne-Dalton lock only requires replacing the outer portion of the lock on either system.

Instructions

  1. Cable Style T Handle Lock

    • 1

Close the garage door fully. The cable T lock automatically locks when the door is in the closed position.

    • 2

Pry the star washer locking the inner lock handle plate to the stem of the outer door lock with a flat-head screwdriver. Continue prying until you are able to grab the sides of the star washer with a pair of pliers. Pull the star washer off the stem with the pliers and discard the washer.

    • 3

Pull the inner lock handle plate away from the door and off the outer door lock shaft. Remove the screws securing the outer door lock to the door with a Phillips screwdriver. The screws are on the inside of the garage door and thread into sleeves of the outer door lock.

    • 4

Go outside and pull the outer door lock out of the Wayne-Dalton door. Insert a new outer door lock into the door, aligning the mounting sleeves and lock shaft through the holes in the door.

    • 5

Thread the screws into the door and into the threaded sleeves of the outer door lock. Tighten securely with the Phillips screwdriver.

    • 6

Slip the inner lock plate over the lock shaft and secure it with a new star washer.

    Lock Bar Type L Handle

    • 7

Remove the four screws securing the inner deadbolt mechanism to the Wayne-Dalton garage door with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the deadbolt off the door to reveal the mounting screws for the outside lock cylinder.

    • 8

Turn the two mounting screws counterclockwise with a Phillips screwdriver and remove them from the door. The solver mounting plate covering the hole on the inside of the door will come off once you remove the screws.

    • 9

Go outside and pull the outer door lock cylinder and trim away from the door. Insert a new cylinder and trim through the hole in the door. Place a piece of duct tape across the lock cylinder and door to hold the cylinder in place while you secure it from the inside.

    • 10

Place the silver mounting plate over the hole on the inside of the door, lining up the mounting holes on the plate with the threaded sleeves of the outer door cylinder. Thread the screws through the plate and into the sleeves. Tighten with the Phillips screwdriver.

    • 11

Reinstall the deadbolt over the mounting plate, ensuring the flat tab on the outer door cylinder fits into the groove on the inside of the deadbolt. Secure it with the four retaining screws.
