How to Install the Front Panels of an Older Model Borg-Warner Air Conditioner

Installing the front panels of an older model Borg-Warner air conditioner is no different than installing the front panels on other central air conditioning units, such as the Trane or Rheem brands. The front panels of the older model Borg-Warner units are the standard front panels with the "L" shaped edges. Many older central air units use similar front panels. The recessed "L" edges contain the four bolts that attach the panel to the unit. The bolts may be hidden under bolt covers. Borg-Warner central air conditioner units were manufactured until 1986 under the “Borg-Warner” name. In 1986, the Borg-Warner name was changed to York and the central air units were sold under the York brand name.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the sides of the existing front panel on the Borg-Warner air conditioner unit. Locate the four bolt covers, two on each side of the unit. The bolt covers may appear to be welded spots in the recessed right and left sides of the front panel. However, the covers are designed to be inconspicuous. Look carefully to find four raised spots on the metal, two on each side of the front panel.

    • 2

Pry each of the four bolt covers off with the flat-head screwdriver.

    • 3

Unscrew each of the four bolts with the screwdriver. Remove each bolt from the unit.

    • 4

Remove the existing front panel from the front of the air conditioner unit. The panel slides off the unit once the bolts are removed.

    • 5

Put the new front panel on the front of the unit and align the bolt holes with the existing holes on each side of the unit.

    • 6

Screw each of the four bolts into the holes using the screwdriver. Replace the bolt covers to hide the bolt heads.
