Mix 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap with 1/4-gallon of hot water. Dampen a rag with the solution and wipe down the awning’s underside to remove any dirt, grime and debris. Rinse away the soapy water with another damp rag and allow the awning to dry completely before continuing.
Measure the awning's length and width. Transfer these measurements onto a rigid foam insulation panel. Slip on a pair of work gloves and safety goggles then cut the insulation panel with a utility knife.
Load a caulking gun with insulation adhesive then run a thin bead along the edge of the insulation. Apply another thin bead of adhesive to the backside of the insulation in a zigzag pattern.
Look for metal cross beams on the awning. Apply a bead of adhesive to these beams as well.
Line up the first section of insulation on the edge of the awning. Press the board into place and hold it there for 30 seconds. Mount rigid board to the rest of the awning with the sheets flush against one another.
Wait for the foam board to set for at least one to two hours before sealing the seams with a bead of silicone caulk. This provides a water-tight barrier to prevent moisture from reaching and dissolving the adhesive.
