How to Connect a Multi Color Light to a Light Switch for the Pool

Multicolored lights decorate your pool at relatively low cost and provide an effect that colors your water in a multitude of ways. A special housing encases the light to prevent water infiltration and the a nearby junction box powers the light and other devices in the pool area. Pool lights are often connected to a light switch to make turning them on and off as convenient as possible but if this isn't the case, carefully hook them up yourself to give you greater control over when the lights get used.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the breaker in your main power box that supplies electricity to the pool area. This prevents the risk of an electrical accident when performing maintenance on the lights.

    • 2

Use a screwdriver to undo the light housing from the pool deck and remove it from the water, placing it on the top of the deck. The power cable should be long enough to allow this.

    • 3

Remove any screws or clamps on the front of the light housing to pull off the faceplate and unscrew the old light.

    • 4

Screw the multicolored bulb into the housing, slide the faceplate back in place and tighten the screws or clamps to prevent water from getting into the housing.

    • 5

Replace the gasket at the base of the housing with a fresh one to ensure a watertight seal and place the housing back into the pool deck, tightening the screws with a screwdriver to hold it in place. If you see air bubbles coming out of the housing, remove it immediately from the water and check for leaks, tightening any loose sections on the faceplate or housing.

    • 6

Open the junction box near the pool that powers the lights and locate the main supply cable. All the white wires in the box feed into the main cable, making it simple to find.

    • 7

Knock out an unused plug in the junction box by the main supply cable and run a power cable from the box to an outlet that is light switch controlled. Verify the voltage requirements for the outlet and the box are equal to prevent a short.

    • 8

Restore power to the breaker and test the light switch to verify it correctly controls the multicolored light.
