How to Reglaze a Shower Floor

Updating or renovating an old bathroom can be costly and time-consuming. While quality work is important to the appearance and durability of your renovations, some corners can be cut to save you time and money. Reglazing your shower floor is an effective alternative to replacing it altogether. If your existent shower floor is in good condition but can benefit from an updated look, you can reglaze the surface to breathe new life into its appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Rough up the dry shower tile with 220-grit carbide sandpaper. By roughing up the tile you create a better surface to which the primer and glaze can adhere.

    • 2

Remove dust from the sanding with a hand vacuum. Spray all-purpose cleaner onto a clean cloth and wipe down the shower floor to remove any remaining dust residue, dirt or debris.

    • 3

Cover and protect the shower walls and floor area outside the shower with plastic drop cloths. Secure the drop cloths with painter's tape so they stay put until the reglazing process is finished.

    • 4

Fill the paint sprayer with epoxy-based primer. Move the sprayer back and forth over the surface to apply a thin, even coat. Allow the primer to dry overnight. Apply a second coat of primer if you're altering the color of dark tiles.

    • 5

Spray the acrylic urethane-based paint in one thin, even coat over the primed shower floor. Allow the paint to cure for 24 hours. Apply a second coat and allow it to dry for 24 hours.

    • 6

Buff the reglazed shower floor using a buffer and buffing pads to bring it to a lustrous shine.
