How to Remove Fiberglass Mesh Tape

Fiberglass mesh tape provides a strong bond for many construction and repair applications, include drywall and tile work. This tape is self-adhesive and designed to serve as a strong, lasting bond to aid in holding elements in place or for patching holes, cracks or other problems. For some jobs, adhesive, drywall mud or sealant can increase the difficulty of getting the tape off. Learning how to remove fiberglass mesh tape will help you remove the tape without damaging surfaces.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape off any paint, drywall mud, sealant or other material that covers or overlaps the fiberglass mesh tape. Loosen one edge of the tape and pull the tape back on itself, toward the part still stuck to the surface.

It works better to remove the tape by pulling one end up and using steady pressure to pull the tape back toward itself to pull it off. This technique also helps to keep from dislodging tiles, if you're removing tape from tile work.

    • 2

Apply adhesive remover if the fiberglass tape resists removal. Adhesive remover can break down any extra glue, such as epoxy used with the tape, and loosens the tape's own adhesive to make it easier to pull off. Leave the adhesive remover on for three or four hours, or for as long as the product directions specify.

    • 3

Use a scraper or card scraper to lift the end of the fiberglass tape. If there isn't an accessible end, cut the tape carefully with a utility knife or razor blade.
Apply the scraper to the edge and corner of the tape where you cut it until you lift enough of the tape's end to get a firm grip. Pull the tape's end firmly back toward the area of the tape still sticking to the surface.

Slide the scraper under the loosened end of the tape to help remove the rest of the tape if it's difficult to pull loose.
