How to Take Off a Window Knob

Window knobs or handles may come in all shapes and sizes, but their primary purpose is to facilitate the opening and closing of windows. Most window knobs are a one-piece design that may or may not have a locking mechanism. This type of knob can be taken off from the inside of the window by removing the appropriate screws attaching it to the window. However, if the knob is part of a more intricate design, such as a casement window, a little more work is required because the knob can also be a part of the crank mechanism.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the casement window by turning the handle to crank it open. If you cannot see the handle's screws, open the window far enough so that they are exposed.

    • 2

Unscrew the mounting screws connecting the handle to the cranking mechanism or the window.

    • 3

Pull the handle up to remove it from the crank. If the handle is not moving, it may be stuck because the handle and the cranking mechanism were painted. Gently move the handle from side to side while pulling up to remove it.
